The forts in Jaipur can truly be called epitomes of
the heroic spirit of Rajput warriors. A visit to the
majestic forts of Jaipur reminds one of the glorious
history of the bygone royal era. These forts indeed
seem to speak tales of the remarkable valor of Rajputanas
and transport you to the world of chivalry and heroism.
Jaipur is home to the three striking forts of Amer,
Jaigarh and Nahargarh that have gained wide acclaim
from all over the world. These forts hold special significance
in the history of Jaipur and are definitely a must visit.
Among all the three imposing forts of Jaipur, Amer Fort
is the most famous. The former capital of the Kacchawaha
clan of Rajputs before Jaipur was established, Amer
is situated at a hilltop about 11 km from Jaipur city.
The exciting elephant ride up to the fort is a major
crowd puller. The major attraction is the awe-inspiring
Sheesh Mahal which has thousands of mirrors embedded
in its walls and ceiling and makes for a spectacular
sight at the Amer Fort in Jaipur.
Jaigarh Fort is perhaps the largest and the highest
among all the three forts of Jaipur. Perched at a height
of nearly 650 feet above the ground from where one can
take breathtaking views of the entire Jaipur city below.
The major attraction at Jaigarh Fort is the world's
largest cannon 'Jaivana' that is perhaps the only of
its kind. Weighing about 50 tons, it truly reflects
the genius of the rulers of the period. Nahargarh or
'Victory Fort', as it is popularly known, stands at
a height of 350 feet and is another masterpiece of architecture.
The 9 palaces within the fort built by Sawai Madho Singh
II for his wives are a must see. The delicate frescoes
and carvings at the palaces remind of the remarkable
architecture of the period.
