Jaigarh Fort in Jaipur is the largest among all the
three forts of Amer, Jaigarh and Nahargarh. It is also
the highest, rising up to nearly 650 feet above the
ground! A visit to Jaigarh Fort is always thrilling
for a tourist as it allows him to get breathtaking views
of the Jaipur city below that looks nothing but a dummy
from such an altitude. Located at a distance of 15 km
from Jaipur, Jaigarh Fort is also popularly known as
'Victory Fort' and stands as a glorious reminder of
the heroism of Rajput warriors.
Jaigarh Fort in Jaipur holds the pride of being one
of the few invincible forts of medieval India. It is
indeed a remarkable piece of military architecture built
by Sawai Jai Singh II in 1726 to avert enemy attack
on the two strategic cities of Amer and Jaipur. Jaigarh
Fort was primarily used as an army base and is therefore
quite simple and rugged unlike the other forts in Jaipur.
It is also believed that the royal family of Jaipur
hoarded its treasure at the Jaigarh Fort. The government
even searched through the fort for the valuables several
years later but could not find anything.
Jaigarh Fort in Jaipur attracts a large number of visitors
from all over the world to its gigantic cannon 'Jaivana'
that is acclaimed to be the world's largest cannon on
wheels. The cannon weighs up to 50 tons and has a 20
feet long barrel. It is said that a single shot of the
cannon used nearly 100 kg of gunpowder and had a range
of about 22 miles. The cannon at Jaigarh Fort in Jaipur
is truly a masterpiece and is a must see. Another main
attraction at the fort is the enormous water tanks with
the largest having a capacity to store up to 60,00,000
gallons of water! The unique water storage system devised
at the Jaigarh Fort is indeed intriguing. There is also
a museum and armory within the fort. One can see ancient
artifacts and photographs of the royal family at the
museum, while the armory exhibits a diverse collection
of marvelous weapons used during warfare at the time.
